Steady features a colorful oculus, or circular opening, balanced between two straight lines like a tripod. Built in 2015, this is one of the artist’s largest pieces,11.5 tall 6.5 wide 2 feet deep. It is made of steel and polyurethane paint.
Ben likes the tension of creating pieces that look like they should stand but do so on their own. The oculus center and unpainted body are intended to draw your eye there, to encourage you to view through it. Steady was created with the viewer in mind, seeking them to react with the sculpture, walk around it, view it, and interact.
Ben Pierce’s sculpture is modern, simple, and honest.
Pierce was born in Southeast Missouri and raised on traditional values, honesty and hard work. He constructs simple geometric forms to capture the viewers’ interest and stir their emotions. Negative space is a large aspect of Pierce’s work that helps to create tension to capture and focus on space.
