About the Artist
Founded in 1990 by Artistic/Executive Director Douglas Scott, the organization was originally known as Dance Force. The company began as a traditional dance company – all members were professional dancers without disabilities. In 1993, through a partnership with VSA arts of GA, Shepherd Center and Special Audiences, Douglas began teaching dance classes for persons with physical disabilities. Two years later, he incorporated dancers with disabilities into the company’s performances. In 1998, Dance Force was rebranded as Full Radius Dance. The company continues to be the only professional physically integrated dance company in the state of Georgia.
Recent highlights include the presentation, in March 2017, of the 25th anniversary concert “Silver” at 7Stages Theatre. Subsequently, the concert was performed at the Harlem School of the Arts in NYC as part of the “Disability. Dance. Artistry. Initiative” administered by Dance/NYC and at the Una Mirada Diferente Festival in Madrid, Spain. Full Radius Dance was the first USA company ever presented at the festival. Our appearance was underwritten by the festival, the US Embassy, and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. The company’s concert “Tapestry” (March 2018) was heralded by ArtsAtl as a “masterwork” and was recorded by The Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for inclusion in their permanent collection. The division houses the world’s largest and most comprehensive archive devoted to the documentation of dance.
Full Radius Dance maintains a busy schedule in Georgia with performances, classes, and workshops and by supporting the Georgia dance community through the presentation of the Modern Atlanta Dance (MAD) Festival. The company also has a deep commitment to education and outreach and brings a unique artistic experience to schools, senior citizen centers, and disability groups on a regular basis.
