Roswell Arts Fund Installs Inaugural Artistic Bike Rack

Ribbon cutting. "Unity" by Nathan Pierce. Located at Northwood Elementary. Sponsored by Northwood Foundation.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first in a series of Artistic Bike Racks was held on Thursday, November 7, 2019.

The Artistic Bike Rack program is a partnership between the City of Roswell and the Roswell Arts Fund that stemmed out the Roswell Public Art Master Plan that was presented to Mayor and City Council in 2017. Weaving the arts into urban planning, these masterful examples of functional art are a wonderful way to capture the city’s vibe, provoke curiosity, and spark joy. The artistic bike racks serve the purpose of encouraging bike riding in Roswell’s bike-friendly community, while also being interesting art pieces.

The bike racks were chosen by a selection committee comprised of representatives from Bike Roswell, City of Roswell Transportation, Department of Development Authority, Providence Home Association, local artists and Roswell Arts Fund.

This inaugural bike rack, Unity, was installed outside Northwood Elementary School off Old Alabama Road. Generously sponsored by the Northwood Foundation, it is the first of several artist-designed bike racks that will be installed throughout the city.

“This wonderful piece by the brilliant Nathan Pierce could not have a more fitting name, and represent more aptly this community and the many organizations that came together to turn their common vision into the Artistic Bike Rack program.” noted Ghila Sanders, Executive Director of Roswell Arts Fund.

These bike racks join the ArtAround Roswell Sculpture Tour (Roswell’s “Museum without Walls”), the first public art program launched by the Roswell Arts Fund.
